WRITE UPS - PHASE 2 - SEASON 2025/26 BY RUSS KEITH

W/C 08/12/25

DIV ONE:

There were three 9-1 victories and a 10-nil whitewash this week with the whitewash coming from Molyneux Associates A, Glyn Price, Tony Sweet and Paul Haigh, who returned to form, beating Shopfitting by SWS C.

Molyneux Associates B secured a much needed 9-1 win over bottom team Shopfitting by SWS F with John Steuart playing some great shots backed up with a first maximum for Steve Hill. Mel Birwe won SWS’s only point beating Ben Stanbury.

Molyneux Associates C lost 1-9 to shop B and now almost need a miracle to stave off relegation in the final week of phase two. The single point came form Yaz Azizi beating Colin Mitchell.

Sam Rose and Mike Briggs (Shopfitting by SWS A) secured maximums in their 9-1 win over two-player Crafthole A and now lead the division by five points. The best match saw Rose come from 1-2 down to just defeat Shirley Luckhurst 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9.

DIV TWO:

Woodland Fort's Brian Luscombe secured a perfect maximum without dropping a game all night except for the doubles with Abel Hernandez against Horrabridge's astonishingly good doubles team Isa Puente and Dave Wilson. Crispin Jordan was unfortunate in losing to Fort’s Jon Goodfield 7-11, 11-5, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7.

Draw specialists Crafthole B managed to get the extra point and go ahead of Lee Mill in this mid table clash. There were a few good matches and a very entertaining doubles which unfortunately Lee Mill lost. Ann Warren had a good comeback from 2-1 down to beat Crafthole’s Martin Wilcox in five games.

With a draw Shopfitting by SWS D now lead this division but nothing will be decided until the final phase matches next week as the league table shows five out of the eight teams could gain promotion.

SWS D played their close friends from their E team and found themselves 3 nil down only to draw level at 4 each. Chris Tucker (E team) then overcame Steve Foster to regain the lead in the match and to secure his hard-fought maximum. Les Cole who hadn’t played any singles matches then stepped up for the E team to partner Keith James but it backfired as Foster and Barnes took the set to level the match. The whole match was a close affair with no less than six sets going to the fifth end and the E team winning 405-400 points throughout the evening.

DIV THREE:

Table toppers Astor B proved too strong for mid table Fitness At Home winning 8-2 with maximums from Astor's Alper Eroglu and Nigel Aston who also took the doubles. The closest and most exciting game was between Astor's Ken Chambers who after being 2 ends down against John Dodd fought back well only to lose in a fifth end tie break 4-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-4, 10-12.

Two 10 nil matches saw Shopfitting by SWS G (Jack Heinemann, Neel Shivane and Ayaan Chatterjee) beat Astor C and Astor A (Clive Davies, Andy Watmore and Steve Harvey) beat Molyneux Associates E. With Astor C’s victory they have secured promotion back to division two with a match to spare.

Visitors Molyneux Associate F could only field two players as they lost 9-1 to their D club mates who are now one point behind the second-place team and have everything to play for next week. The closest game was between Jeremy Wilcox for Molyneux D and Dominic Goss for Molyneux F, with Goss gaining the only point for his team 9-11, 7-11, 11-4, 13-11, 11-8.

horrabridge 5-5 cRAFTHOLE b (ANTHONY SHAPLAND) (01/12/25)

    W/C 01/12/25

    DIV ONE:

Shopfitting by SWS B beat their C club mates 7-3 in a great evening of table tennis with Dan Kayes taking the only maximum, this was backed up with a brace from Jan Walaszkowski. Johnny Hill (C team) required two tie-break wins to defeat Colin Mitchell12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 15-13.

Molyneux Associates B, after a slow start to the phase picked up much needed points beating their C club mates 9-1. Ben Stanbury, playing better with every game, picked up his first maximum along with John Steuart. The up-and-coming Toby Spencer took his teams solitary point but played extremely well with some outrages play and clinical finishing.

Shopfitting by SWS F languish at the bottom of the division after being whitewashed by their A club mates. All games were won in three ends except for Johnny Hill requiring a fifth end win over Mel Birwe 5-11, 8-11, 12-110, 11-5, 11-7.

    DIV TWO:

Woodland Fort B needed the doubles to claim a 5-5 draw against their clubmates, Woodland Fort A. For the B team Graham Cooksley was on maximum form while Jon Goodfield and Abel Hernandez both picked up braces for Fort A. Surprisingly only one game went to a fifth end decider when Hernandez beat Ralph Stone 14-12, 4-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7

Shopfitting by SWS D managed to scrape a 6-4 win over Lee Mill A. Richard Smaridge with his anti-loop rubber was unfortunate to lose to SWS’s Steve Foster losing 11-6 in the 5th game, this was Smaridge’s first loss of the phase.

Horrabridge came within a whisker of securing their first victory of the season against Crafthole B
Captain Crispin Jordan, supported by the young duo of Max Crispin and Isa Puente, Horrabridge produced one of their strongest performances yet. After seven games they held a 4-3 lead, only for Crafthole to rally and edge ahead 5–4, driven by an inspired display from their star player Anthony Shapland, who won all of his matches in straight sets. That left the final doubles match to decide the overall result. Crispin Jordan and Puente stepped up to face Shapland and Martin Hynes and, backed by a vocal home crowd, delivered the performance of the night. Playing with confidence and determination, the Horrabridge pair swept aside their opponents in straight sets to secure a well-earned 5–5 draw.

Previously related Shopfitting by SWS E outplayed previously promoted Woodland Fort C beating them 9-1. Chris Tucker returned to the team and secured a perfect maximum and was backed up by Tony Powlesland winning his first maximum of the season. Unfortunately, Les Cole lost the solitary point to young Lucas Deves 10-12, 6-10, 10-12.

    DIV THREE:

Previously relegated Astor A (Clive Davies, Andy Watmore and Steve Harvey) look certain to gain promotion after beating bottom club Astor C 10 nil and lead the division with a game in hand.

Molyneux Associates E and F drew their match but it was Shaun Hughes of the F team who was the player of the match taking a hard earnt maximum playing 14 out of the maximum fifteen ends. Jeremy Willcox won his first point of the phase beating Jamie Canning in straight games.

Molyneux Associates D drew 5-5 with Astor B in a close encounter. Peter Andrews gained a maximum for Molyneux, overcoming Nigel Aston in a tight match, winning the fifth game 11-6. Another very close match saw Alper Eroglu of Astor beat Jeremy Wilcox of Molyneux 7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9.

Adam Forshaw gained yet another maximum for Fitness At Home and along with Mike Chapple brace helped secure a 7-3 victory over Shopfitting by SWS G. Each of the SWS players managed to win a point.

lee mill beating horrabridge 6-4 (27/11/25)

      W/C 24/11/25

      DIV ONE:

Shopfitting by SWS C (Johnny Hill 3) got the better of Molyneux Associates B winning 6-4 in this encounter. The very first set of the evening saw SWS’s Steve Garlick revenge his previous defeat to Russ Keith in yet another five game match between these two players. It was an epic close encounter lasting 35 mins with Garlick winning 10-12, 11-7, 17-15, 12-14, 11-7.

Promoted Shopfitting by SWS F suffered a whitewash at the hands of, or rather, the bats of Molyneux Associates A. All except one match ended in straight games.

Another whitewash, saw Shopfitting by SWS A beat Molyneux Associates C and all but two sets were won in straight games. Molyneux’s Toby Spencer shocked Mike Briggs with a fine performance and showed no nerves only losing 5-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7, 6-11.

Crafthole A could only field two players against visitors Shopfitting by SWS B but put up a brave battle losing 3-7. SWS’s Dan Kayes took the only maximum requiring a slice of good fortune beating Iain Oxenham 17-15- 11-5, 13-11 and Mike Cookson 11-5, 12-14, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9. Oxenham did however get some luck requiring two tie-break wins over Jan Walaszkowski 11-5, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10.

      DIV TWO:

Shopfitting by SWS D hosted newly promoted arrival of Horrabridge from division 3 who came back strongly in the second half of the matches but could only secure their only point in the doubles. Isa Puente from Spain was very unlucky not to come away with a couple of individual wins over Rob Barnes & Steve Foster with both matches going to 5 games.

Crafthole B and Woodland Fort B played out a draw which was repeat of the result when the two sides met in phase one. The statistics proved how close the matches were with Crafthole scoring 337 points to Fort’s 326 pts. The man of the match was Fort’s Graham Cooksley taking the only maximum.

John Goodfield of Woodland Fort A secured a maximum in his teams 7-3 victory over Shopfitting by SWS F but needed a fifth end to beat Les Cole 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-7

      DIV THREE:

Astor A won 9-1 over Fitness At Home with Adam Forshaw saving the whitewash defeating Steve Harvey 2-11, 4-11, 9-11, 13-11, 9-11. Harvey nearly lost another match against John Dodd but recovered to win the final end 11-4.

Astor B defeated Molyneux Associates E in a very close encounter winning 6-4 coming down to the doubles to decide the match which Ken Chambers and Alper Eroglu won 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 against Alan Spencer and Abi Obanla. The match was played at a high standard for this level with some terrific rallies. Abi Obanla (Molyneux) was the player of the evening the only one to achieve his maximum. However, he was pushed all the way when defeating Chambers in the game of the night 5-11, 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7.

Molyneux Associates F, Shaun Hughes, Dominic Goss and Jamie Canning won their first match this phase beating bottom club Astor C 10 nil but despite the score there were some close encounters.

      W/C 17/11/25

      DIV ONE:

Shopfitting by SWS A surprised Molyneux Associates A by beating them 9-1 with only Garry Reed getting Molyneux’s point beating Martin Parnell. Mike Briggs and Sam Rose both secured maximums although Briggs needed a fifth-end tie-break 15-13 to beat Glyn Price.

Shopfitting by SWS B (Jan Walaszkowski, Colin Mitchell and Dan Kayes) went one better by whitewashing Molyneux Associates B with some vicious shots from all their players, leaving Molyneux at the bottom of the table.

Toby Spencer claimed his first ever maximum in the top division, losing only two games out of eleven and then went on to win the doubles and the match 7-3 over Shopfitting by SWS F.

Johnny Hill was in fine form taking a maximum for Shopfitting by SWS C along with the doubles with John Palmer but his team mates failed to win any other individual games, therefore losing 4-6 to Crafthole A who currently lead the division by two points.

      DIV TWO:

Relegated Shopfitting by SWS D (Steve Foster, Rob Barnes and Bryn Ford) showed the difference in each division by whitewashing promoted Woodland Fort C (Richard Searle, Lucas Deves and Pav Mohammed) winning 30 out of 33 games. Richard Searle was he winner of the three games for Fort.

There was a 9-1 victory for Woodland Fort B over Shopfitting by SWS E does not portray the closeness of the evening, with only three games being settled in straight games. Fort’s Graham Cooksley had to come from two games down to defeat Keith James but then needed a deciding fifth game after being two games up against by Les Cole. For SWS Tony Powsland picked up the solitary victory with a net filled narrow 12-10, 11-8, 13-11 win against Shaun Hughes.

A re-arranged match saw Shopfitting by SWS D’s Bryn Ford ride his luck throughout the evening winning 5 out of 7 tie-breaks against Woodland Fort A. Against Norman Hall he achieved a 12-10, 11-7, 14-12 win and against Brian Luscombe he won 13-11, 9-11, 14-12, 4-11, 12-10. After that he lost out losing both tie-breaks to Abel Hernandez 10-12, 11-9, 11-3, 8-11, 10-12 but his side still came away with a 7-3 victory.

There were some blistering shots from Crafthole's Antony Shapland but just not enough to stop Woodland Fort's Abel Hernandez from getting the only maximum of the night. A few of the matches could have gone either way and the evening ending in a draw seeing both teams are only separated by a single league point.

      DIV THREE:

Astor B defeated Molyneux Associates F (8-2) but it was Shaun Hughes who got both of Molyneux’s points and it started with Hughes beating Ken Chambers 11-7, 11-0, 11-6 and ending in him beating Barrie Oliver 11-4, 11-5, 5-11, 11-6. Long standing Nigel Aston was just too much for Hughes winning 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.

Adam Forshaw scored a straight games maximum for visitors Fitness At Home against Molyneux Associates D. Forshaw then partnered John Dodd to a straight games win in the doubles giving his team a 6-4 win. Dodd managed to take a brace of wins and his toughest was against Jeremy Willcox winning a fifth end tie-break 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10.

      W/C 10/11/25

      DIV ONE:

Crafthole A, with a 9-1 victory over Shopfitting by SWS F are the early leaders of Div One. Trevor Mole taking SWS’s solitary point beating Iain Oxenham 11-6, 11-99, 8-11, 4-11, 11-3.

Sam Rose took a maximum for Shopfitting by SWS A only losing one end due to a tie-break as his team won 8-2 over Molyneux Associates B. Throughout all the games there was some outstanding play from every player in a thrilling match.

There was a great battle by two of the top teams and Shopfitting by SWS B came out 6-4 winners over Molyneux Associates A. The top two players squared up and SWS’s Mike Griffiths came away with the point beating Tony Sweet in straight games 12-10, 11-3, 11-9.

Molyneux Associates C shocked Shopfitting by SWS C by beating them 6-4 but it was SWS’s Steve Garlick who came away with the only maximum although he had to fight hard for the points in an epic 14 out of a maximum 15 games played. The best match saw Garlick come from 2-1 down to beat young Toby Spencer 5-11, 19-21, 13-11, 11-77, 11-6.

      DIV TWO:

Shopfitting by SWS D absolutely battered Crafthole B in the first half of their match, winning 4 out of the opening 5 sets. It was only after the home team plied the visitors with some home-made chocolate cake did things improve, with SWS then going 5-4 down before rallying to win the doubles. Crafthole’s Anthony Shapland continued his fine form with another outstanding maximum. Five of the matches went to the fifth game with Crafthole winning four of them along with all four tie-breaks!

The score line of 9-1 in favour of Woodland Fort B is not truly reflective of the overall performance of Horrabridge with some very close games. There were maximums by both Ralph Stone and Shaun Hughes. Max Jordan won Horrabridge’s only point beating Glenn Delaney 8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 5-11, 9-11.

Lee Mill won 6-4 over previously relegated Shopfitting by SWS E with Richard Smaridge unbeaten and only losing one end to each of the SWS’s players. Ann Warren needed 5 games to overcome Tony Powlesland 12-14, 11-3, 10-12, 11-4, 11-4.

Woodland for A and C met and almost everything went the way of the A team including all six tie-breaks in their 9-1 victory. Lucas Deves saved the whitewash beating Jon Goodfield 11-3, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7. Abel Hernandez secured his maximum with Noman Hall also taking his first maximum of the season.

      DIV THREE:

Astor B defeated Shopfitting By SWS G 8-2 although the scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the games with only 3 sets going to 3 ends. There were some long rallies with big hitting especially from the young SWS team. Ken Chambers and Alper Eroglu (Astor B) achieved maximums. Chambers after a slow start to the season is coming back to form as his win against Jacopo Corino 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 showed great resolve.

The match between Molyneux Associates D and E went the way of the rankings with the D team winning 6-4 but no single player claimed a maximum.

Astor C still battle hard but yet again lost 10 nil, this time to Fitness At Home.

Shaun Hughes of Molyneux Associates F took the first and only point of the evening for his team (beating Clive Davies in straight games) as they then lost the remaining games to Astor C.

      W/C 03/11/25

      DIV ONE:

Molyneux Associates A (Tony Sweet, Glyn Price and Garry Reed) started phase two win a 10 nil win over their B club mates but the scoreline didn’t reflect the quality of some of the games between each set of players with great attacking, counter attacking and defensive play.

Shopfitting by SWS B managed to get the better of their A team club mates 6-4 with the return of Mike Griffiths who took the only maximum, but he needed a fifth end epic tie-break against Sam Rose 9-11, 13-15, 11-6, 11-4, 14-12 to secure it.

Newly promoted Shopfitting by SWS F (Trevor Mole 2) suffered a 2-8 loss to their C club mates where Steve Garlick earned a perfect maximum by not losing a game.

Molyneux Associates C played their first game in Div One after being promoted and lost 1-9. It was young Toby Spencer who excelled by taking the solitary point off Mike Cookson 8-11, 10-8, 11-9, 11-7

      DIV TWO:

With a few easy three-setters for each side and both five-setters going to the home side, Lee Mill came to the doubles needing a win for a hard-earned draw against Woodland Fort A. Lee Mill’s Ricard Smaridge found himself 2 nil up against Graham Cooksley but Cooksley fought back to level at 2-a-piece. With Smaridge unusually finding himself pegged back, he dug in and managed to win the final game 11-7 Mark Chapman and Smaridge teamed up to come from one game down to win in four and secure the draw.

Crafthole B start the second phase as they did the first, with an 8-2 win. This time the opponents were Woodland Fort C. Another commanding performance from Anthony Shapland, dropping just the one game to Steve Harvey on his way to a maximum and the doubles with Paul Ager. With an overall points tally of +40 he was definitely the form player of the evening.

Relegated Shopfitting by SWS E visited promoted Horrabridge and came away with a 6-4 win but it could have been 8-2 if SWS’s Tony Powlesland hadn’t lost two tie-breaks against Crispin Jordan and Isa Puente (11-13, 10-12, 10-12). Puente went on to secure her maximum.

      DIV THREE:

Astor B reversed their previous score against their A team winning 6-4 although at one stage they were 6-12 up. Alper Eroglu claimed his first ever maximum in the league and revenged his previous loss to the A team.

Two player Fitness At Home lost 1-9 to Molyneux Associates E with John Dodd saving the whitewash beating Tom Housden in five games. Housden also needed five ends to beat Chris Dodd 10-12, 8-11, 11-4, 11-4, 14-12.

Shaun Hughes of Molyneux Associates F claimed a brace but his team lost 2-8 to Shopfitting by SWS G with Jacopo Corino winning his second maximum of the season.

Again, Astor C lost 10 nil (Kieran McGarry, Dave Nash and Paul Eaton) but all credit to the team as they turn up every week for their match. This week it was Molyneux Associates D that inflicted the defeat.
